Property and private pensions make up 40% and 35% of household wealth in Great Britain. Median wealth was £647,400 for households that own outright, £404,700 with a mortgage and £40,800 for renters.

How this works

Enter your net worth: everything you own, pensions and property included, less everything you owe. If you haven't added it up, the net worth calculator does it category by category.

For all households in Great Britain the ONS publishes six points on the wealth distribution for April 2020 to March 2022: the bottom 10% threshold (£16,500), the lower quartile (£70,500), the median (£293,700), the upper quartile (£662,100), the top 10% threshold (£1,200,500) and the top 1% threshold (£3,121,500).

Between those points the calculator interpolates on the logarithm of wealth (log-linear interpolation). Wealth multiplies rather than adds as you move up the distribution, so a straight line between points on a log scale follows it more closely than a straight line in pounds. Below the bottom 10% threshold it draws a straight line from £0, and anything at or below £0 is the lowest point. Above the top 1% threshold nothing is published, so the answer is simply top 1%.

For each age band the ONS publishes the median but not the other points. This calculator assumes each age band's wealth is spread like the country's as a whole, and scales the national points so the median matches the band's. That makes the band thresholds estimates, not published figures. In practice wealth is probably more spread out among younger households, where some own a home and many don't, so treat a percentile within an age band as a rough position rather than an exact rank.

The ONS counts net property, private pensions, savings and investments, and physical wealth such as cars and contents. It leaves out the State Pension. The figures are from 2020 to 2022 and haven't been adjusted for what prices have done since.

Why property and pensions dominate

Most UK wealth isn't money in the bank. Net property wealth is 40% of the total and private pensions 35%; savings and investments are 14% and physical wealth such as cars and contents 10%.

That shapes every comparison here. Households that own outright had median wealth of £647,400, those with a mortgage £404,700, and renters £40,800. If you rent, your percentile mostly measures your pensions and savings against households that also own a home, which is why renting households tend to sit lower in the distribution.

Pensions also explain why wealth rises so steeply with age: a workplace pension started in your 20s is small for years, then compounds. Defined benefit pensions are counted at an estimated value, which the ONS changed its method for in this round, so older bands are the least certain.

Questions

How rich am I for my age in the UK?

Compare your net worth with the ONS median for your age band: £109,800 for households headed by someone aged 25 to 34, £209,600 at 35 to 44, £301,900 at 45 to 54 and £496,500 at 55 to 64. Above the median puts you in the top half for your age. The calculator estimates your exact percentile.

What net worth puts you in the top 10% in the UK?

£1,200,500 or more, across all households in Great Britain, according to the ONS for April 2020 to March 2022. The threshold is lower for younger households and higher for those in their 50s and 60s.

What net worth is top 1% in the UK?

The ONS puts the top 1% of households at £3,121,500 or more. That 1% held about 10% of all household wealth, the same share as the least wealthy half of households combined.

What is the average net worth in the UK by age?

The ONS median household wealth runs from £15,200 at 16 to 24 to a peak of £502,500 at 65 to 74, then £373,100 at 75 and over. Across all ages it is £293,700. The mean is higher, because a few very wealthy households pull it up.

Are these figures for individuals or households?

Households. The ONS groups them by the age of the household reference person: whoever owns or rents the home, or the higher earner if it is joint. Someone living alone is a household of one; if you share finances with a partner, your combined figure is the fairer comparison.

Why is my percentile low if I rent?

Property and private pensions make up 40% and 35% of all household wealth. Median wealth for renting households was £40,800, against £404,700 for those with a mortgage and £647,400 for those who own outright, so a renter's percentile mostly reflects pensions and savings.
